Title: THE EXPRESSION OF UROKINASE-TYPE PLASMINOGEN ACTIVATOR RECEPTOR IN ORAL SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA.
Abstract: Objective Urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (UPAR) is thought to play an important role in tumor invasion and metastasis. However, there have been few reports in which histologic localization and expression of UPAR has been demonstrated in oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The aim of this study was to investigate the immunohistologic expression of UPAR and the relation of between it and invasion, metastasis and prognosis in oral SCC. Methods Applying Labelled streptavidin biotin method (LsAB) immunohistochemical technique, the expression level of UPAR was evaluated in 80 oral squamous cell carcinoma, 10 oral normal mucosa, 10 oral leukoplakia. The immunohistochemical results were semiquantitatively analysed. The data was statistically handled by chi-square test and rank sum test. Results Compared to oral nomal mucosa and oral leukoplakia, the expression level of UPAR was significantly higher in oral SCC. In oral SCC cell, the immunohistochemical stain of UPAR localizated in cell cytoplasm and membrane. In the cases the level of UPAR with lymph node metastasis was significantly higher than without lymph node metastasis, the level of UPAR with poor prognosis was significantly higher than good prognosis, the level of UPAR with invasive growth was significantly higher than ulcerative growth and papillary growth. Conclusion The result indicated that the over-expression UPAR was relevant to the lymph node metastasis, invasion and poor prognosis. The expression level of UPAR may become one of clinical parameters in evaluating metastasis, invasion and prognosis in oral squamous cell carcinoma.
