Title: Expression and clinical significance of VEGF in laryngeal carcinoma
Abstract: Objective: To detect the expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in laryngeal carcinoma and investigate its possible relationship with biological behavior and clinicopathological characteristics in laryngeal carcinoma. Methods: S-P immunohistochemical staining was used to examine the expressions of VEGF in 84 laryngeal carcinoma and 5 vocal cords polyp(VCP) and 5 atypical hyperplasia tissue. The relationships between the expression of VEGF in laryngeal carcinoma and clinical pathologic characters was analyzed by statistical methods. Results: VEGF was localized in cell plasma and vascular endothelial cells of laryngeal carcinoma. The total expression of VEGF was 70.2% in laryngeal carcinoma. The expression had a difference between differentiated degree of laryngeal carcinoma. And there was significiant difference in the expression of different stage. The rate of expression of VEGF in tissues with and without lymphatic metastasis was different, which was significant. Conclusions: Laryngeal carcinoma cells have the autocrine function of VEGF.Overexpression of VEGF can directly stimulated the proliferation of tumor cells. The increase of the expression level of VEGF was related with the lower differentiation of tumors, later clinical stage and occurrence of lymph node metastasis, which suggests that VEGF may be the marker of the increase of malignancy grade in laryngeal carcinoma.
