However, recent studies have placed them in the family Urticaceae (APG, 2003). Cecropia species are generally smallto medium-sized (5–20 m tall), few-branched trees with a candelabrum-like branching system (Fig. 1) with large palmate and peltate leaves (Fig. 2) that are almost circular in circumference, and excentrically attached to the petiole.
