Title: Oxygen-induced restructuring of Au(111) observed by reflection electron microscopy
Abstract: The formation of a long-range superstructure on the Au(111) surface following reaction with oxygen at atmospheric pressure and a temperature of about 1070 K was detected by reflection electron microscopy (REM). This long-range superstructure exhibits unit cell dimensions of about 8.5 nm in the [112] direction and 4.9 nm in the [110] direction. The symmetry of this long-range superstructure is considered to be six-fold. Reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) patterns show a 3×3 R30° structure on the Au(111) surface.
