Title: Sedimentary facies and organic carbon variation in Barremian-Aptian sequences of Northeastern Mexico
Abstract: En los Estados de Durango y Nuevo Leon, Noreste de Mexico afloran excelentes secciones estratigraficas Barremiano-Aptianas. Dos secuencias estratigraficas estudiadas en el area se han dividido en tres unidades litologicas, las cuales han sido descritas como la formacion Cupido, su equivalente lateral, la Formacion Tamaulipas Inferior y la Formacion La Pena. Analisis de las microfacies de las secciones muestras que la parte superior de la Formacion Cupido esta caracterizada por biocalcirruditas con rudistas, biocalcarenitas con oolitas y algas, y facies ricas en asociaciones de foraminiferos bentonicos y ostracodos. Estas facies estan relacionadas paleogeograficamente con condiciones sedimentarias dentro de una plataforma carbonatada somera. La Plataforma Cupido fue el elemento paleogeografico predominante en el Noreste de Mexico del Barremiano al Aptiano temprano. La facies pelagica equivalente en tiempo a la formacion Cupido se extendia hacia el sureste, y esta representada por la Formacion Tamaulipas Inferior. Los bioclastos mas comunes de esta formacion son restos de foraminiferos planctonicos, ostracodos, moluscos y equinodermos. El inicio de la deposicion de la Formacion La Pena al termino del Aptiano temprano se caracteriza por un aumento en los componentes terrigenos y una disminucion significativa en la abundancia de la fauna bentonica. Esta formacion esta formada por una alternancia de margas, lutitas y calizas margosas, que contiene ammonites, foraminiferos planctonicos, ostracodos y radiolarios hacia la parte superior. La acumulacion de la Formacion La Pena fue continua durante el resto del Aptiano, registrando los cambios en las condiciones sedimentarias y en la productividad en la columna de agua, lo cual interrumpio de manera abrupta los depositos carbonatados de la Plataforma Cupido en el Noreste de Mexico. Ammonites indice de la Formacion La Pena permiten una correlacion de estos cambios sedimentarios en base a la biocronologia de estos macrofosiles.
Resultados de los analisis del contenido en carbono/carbonatos sugieren que el cambio de asociaciones ricas en foraminiferos bentonicos de la Formacion Cupido a asociaciones pobres en organismos bentonicos de la formacion La Pena, es coincidente con un incremento del carbono organico desde menos de 0,5 a mas del 18%, respectivamente. Caracterizaciones posteriores de los procesos sedimentologicos en el area de estudio podrian permitir correlaciones, de los niveles ricos en contenido de carbono organico, con eventos anoxicos aptianos reconocidos en otras partes del mundo.
