Title: Biostratigraphy of the Cardenas formation (Upper Cretaceous) San Luis Potosi, Mexico
Abstract: La Formacion Cardenas es una unidad muy fosilifera de 1050m de espesor, de rocas sedimentarias clasticas finas que afloran en una sinclinal asimetrico en la plegada Sierra Madre Oriental. Se han publicado 6 versiones sobre estratigrafia de Cardenas, pero en ellas se han incluido secuencias parcialmente invertidas debido a que no se habia reconocido la estructura del sinclinal. Para este estudio fue cartografiada la region alrededor de Cardenas sinclinal. Para este estudio fue cartografiada la region alrededor de Cardenas en hojas topograficas a la escala de 1:50,000 y el sinclinal de Cardenas fue cartografiado con alidada y plancheta a la escala de 1:4,800. De once secciones medidas, dos fueron estructuralmente simples y bastante completas para poder establecer la secuencia de las unidades estratigraficas. La Formacion Cardenas como aqui se define, se divide en tres miembros que se desIgnan informalmente. El miembro inferior es de 180 m de espesor, de capas alternantes de lutita, arenisca y biosparita (Folk, 1959); el miembro medio es de 445m de lutita y limolita; el miembro superior es de 430m de limolita, arenisca y biosparudita. La Formacion Cardenas esta cubierta discordantemente por la Formacion Tabaco, que consiste de limolita no fosilifera, arenisca y conglomerado. En el presente estudio se colectaron 71 especies de fosiles invertebrados de la Formacion Cardenas: 8 rudistas, 36 bivalvos, 14 gasteropodos, 6 corales, 4 equinoides, 2 serpulidos y 1 braquiopodo. Estos se encuentran en 3 zonas en Cardenas. La zona media y quiza la zona inferior, son correlativas con la zona Cardenas. La zona media y quiza la zona inferior, son correlativas con la zona de Exogirya costata de la planicie costera del Golfo. La zona superior es probablemente mas joven que la zona de Exogyra costata , pero aun Maestrichtiano. La Formacion Cardenas es un tipo de deposito regresivo; durante su formacion la sedimentacion cambio repetidamente de deposito de clasticos finos a la acumulacion de calizas biogenicas.
