Title: INVESTIGATION OF PLATE GIRDER BEHAVIOR UNDER LOAD
Abstract: THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE PLATE GIRDER TESTS WAS TO EXPLORE THE EXTENT AND DEPTH OF WEB PANEL BUCKLING EXPECTED IN PRACTICAL MILD STEEL PLATE GIRDERS, SUBJECTED TO BENDING MOMENTS AND SHEARING FORCE. COMPUTER CALCULATED THEORETICAL LOADS FOR THE ACTUAL LOADING CONDITIONS ARE COMPARED WITH THE ACTUAL GIRDER FAILURE LOADS OR MAXIMUM LOADS ENCOUNTERED IN THE VARIOUS TEST SERIES. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN RECORDED AND COMPUTED STRESS VALUES AND STRESS DISTRIBUTION PATTERNS IN THE STIFFENERS, WEB AND FLANGES ARE DISCUSSED AT LENGTH. FINALLY, SUGGESTIONS ARE PUT FORWARD TO HELP RATIONALIZE DESIGN RULES ENSURING, AT ALL TIMES, AN ADEQUATE MARGIN OF SAFETY AGAINST COLLAPSE. /TRRL/A/
