Title: Buckling/Plastic Collapse Behavior and Strength of Plate Girders Subjected to Combined Bending and Shear Loads
Abstract: This chapter deals with buckling/plastic collapse behavior and the ultimate strength of plate girders subjected to shear and bending loads as well as their combinations. More than 50 years ago Busler and Fujii conducted research works related to this issue including a series of experiments. The fundamental findings related to this issue is briefly introduced at the beginning. That is, buckling and the ultimate strength under pure shear and pure bending loads as well as combined shear and bending loads. The ultimate strength interaction relationship is discussed under combined loading. At that time, plate girders were composed of web and flange plates. Recently, however, because of the adoption of double hull structure, flange is now a part of continuous plating. On the basis of nonlinear finite element method analyses, the difference in collapse behavior of plate girders with isolated flange and continuous flange is explained. The influences of horizontal and vertical stiffeners on web panel, as well as influence of perforations in web are explained.
