Traffic on the Trans European Road Network is managed by an increasing number of national, regional and local Traffic Centres whose Traffic Managers and operators speak many different languages. Language-independent and interoperable data exchange is essential to support the ITS services that will help to eliminate border effects on the Trans European Road Network, achieving greater European integration and efficiency in the road transport system. On the European level DATEX-NET is the standard used for traffic and transportation data exchange between Traffic Management Centres. Sweden is taking an active role in a Steering Committee and the European User-forum for DATEX and at the same time working to extend the use of DATEX-NET to cover also data exchange between Traffic Centres and various other information suppliers. The fact that most of the data processed in the Traffic Management Centres originates from other systems makes it obvious that extensive data exchange between Traffic Centres and between Traffic Centres and various information suppliers is required, and that data exchange procedures have to be unified and standardised to facilitate for this data exchange. Standardisation of the data exchange procedures makes it possible to use existing software resulting in cheaper and more efficient data exchange procedures. This paper describes the DATEX-NET standard for data exchange and the benefits of using it. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102946.Read More
