Title: THE EFFECTS OF BUS DEREGULATION AND THE PRIVATISATION OF THE SCOTTISH BUS GROUP
Abstract: The aim of this report is to evaluate the competition in the supply of Scottish local bus services and the responsiveness of passenger demand. Emphasis is placed on assessing the performance of the Scottish Bus Group (SBG). The study focuses on four key aspects of bus service provision. Bus operation is reviewed first. This includes the impact of changing legislation on service provision and bus company viability. The effectiveness of the legislation in promoting fair and sustained competition is then investigated. This is followed by a discussion on the effect on competitive tendering upon the provision of subsidised services. Finally, the effect on bus users in terms of fares and service quality is assessed.
