Title: PLEIADES: the London-Paris corridor project
Abstract: The roads and ferries that connect London with Paris, Lille and Brussels make up a corridor of strategic trade and leisure routes whose importance is growing rapidly since the creation of the single European market and the opening of the Channel Tunnel. Maximising the efficiency and safety of travel along these routes is a major concern, and advanced transport telematics (ATT) systems have a key role to play. Building on the research and development of the DRIVE I programme, PLEIADES was an 11 MECU DRIVE II pilot project that involved over 80 man years of effort from 20 partners during the period 1992-1995, in order to design, test and evaluate advanced systems for traveller information and network management within the corridor. A consortium comprising infrastructure owners and operators, information providers, system manufacturers and transport and communications specialists from the UK, France and Belgium came together to provide the expertise needed to realise DRIVE's concepts for the Integrated Road Transport Environment (IRTE) in the corridor. There were three principal aims for the PLEIADES project. First, to develop and demonstrate Traffic Information Centres (TICs) in England and France that have real-time knowledge of travel conditions on the main routes for cross-channel trips. Second, to provide and evaluate a range of information services to disseminate relevant information and advice to travellers, drivers and freight hauliers, both before and during journeys along the corridor. And third, to develop state-of-the-art traffic monitoring and control facilities for use throughout the corridor. Particular emphasis was placed on the integration of systems to ensure that information provided to travellers was of good quality, and timely, reliable and consistent across the various distribution media. An important element was the strategies developed for the collection of real-time information for the network and its communication between Traffic Control Centres (TCCs) and TICs. The paper describes some of the 22 applications of ITS systems that were pilot tested and evaluated in PLEIADES, many for the first time in a real-life environment.
