Title: INTEGRATION IN INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS - IT IS POSSIBLE
Abstract: In the past 5 years in the UK major ITS projects have come of age. Notably among these are MATTISSE, Midland Driver Information System, Road Traffic Advisor, the Travel Information Highway and the Common Database for Urban Traffic Management and Control. Our experience in delivering these systems has encompassed technology change, interfaces to existing systems, heuristics and algorithms, a mix of approaches to location referencing and a breadth of users and GUIs to meet their needs. Each of these systems has contributed to national policy directions: managing traffic not building roads, improved use of resources and informing the traveller. In MATISSE upgrade paths in technology and function that take the project from a research context to a vital operational facility for traffic management and travel information in the English Midlands have been identified. In Midlands Driver Information System heuristic methods instead of detailed modelling have been exploited to produce effective operational decision support for one of the largest driver information systems in Europe. This project and QMISS and Road Traffic Advisor - Probe Vehicle Application have contributed to practical implementations of location referencing, the geocoding of transport assets and incidents on road and transport networks. QMISS has demonstrated that existing data sources can be made available to travel information providers through the use of open products and technologies. All projects have overcome issues in interfacing to existing or new systems. (A) For the covering abstract see ITRD E106484.
