Title: QUALITY INSPECTION OF CONCRETE BRIDGES AND WHARFS IN NORWAY
Abstract: This paper reports results from the quality inspection of 35 concrete bridges and 27 wharves of various ages and locations in Norway, that have been exposed to different environments. The structures were built according to existing codes and standards. The inspection's main purpose was to look for deterioration and analyse why it occurred. Its results may be used as a basis for improving the quality of future structures by: (1) improvement of quality assurance; (2) better design and detailing; (3) changing of specifications; (4) planning of maintenance and rehabilitation. The inspection of a structure included: (1) a general visual survey to assess its general condition; (2) a more detailed examination of damaged areas; (3) a half-cell surface potential mapping to detect the rebar corrosion situation; (4) rebar cover measurements using a covermeter. Cylindrical cores were drilled from different parts of the structures, for further examination and testing in the laboratory. The authors conclude from the results that, during design, more attention must be paid to durability, environmental loads, and detailing. They found that concrete cover was usually too low. They recommend a combination of blended cement, silica fume, and entrained air. Quality assurance and quality control during both design and construction are very important.
