Title: ENSURING DURABILITY OF CONCRETE FOR CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE: SPECIFICATION DEVELOPMENT
Abstract: This paper summarises work from a series of studies conducted at CSIRO Division of Building, Construction & Engineering and the University of Sydney. The focus of this work was on the long-term performance of reinforced concrete under high chloride conditions. Work included the monitoring of concrete performance using half cell potential measurements, concrete resistivity and the determination of gravimetric weight loss of steel through corrosion. Corrosion rates of steel in concrete were also measured using anodic polarisation techniques. Concretes considered were made with a range of commercially available portland and supplementary cementitious materials. Using the above information, concretes were classified on the basis of observed long-term performance. The development of specifications for concrete using the above methodology is suggested and requirements are compared with those described in existing bridge design specifications. The information presented suggests that guidelines set down for marine environment concrete in the Austroads Bridge Design Code may not be conservative for a design life of 100 years.
