Abstract: An innovative and experimental system of intermodal shipping was launched in November 2003. Modalohr moves trucks and trailers between France and Italy and is expected to carry 18,000 units this year, up 20 percent from the previous year. The trans-Alpine service is a company owned 51 percent by French National Railways and 49 percent by Lohr Industries. Two trains operate four return services each day, with a two-hour turnaround time at the terminals and a three-hour transit time, and road haulers supply their own tractor units to load and unload their trailers onto the train. The project is financed equally by France, Italy, and user fees, with the governments hoping for European Union support in the future. Preliminary planning is underway for a tunnel to be constructed. The proposed tunnel, which could be operational by 2018, would significantly cut transit time and would be used by both passenger and freight trains at speeds up to 200 km per hour.
