Abstract: This article describes planned continental expansion by Modalohr via the new Autoroute Ferroviaire intermodal service between Perpignan and Luxembourg, due to start on March 31, 2007. The service uses new low-floor piggyback wagons developed for the transalpine shuttle service in the corridor between France and Italy. Currently the trains carry more than 500 vehicles a week, despite height limits. Those are expected to be raised with the new service. A key element is the use of specially designed diagonal ramps at each terminal, which permit simultaneous loading of a whole train. Additional information includes projected operating costs and possible expansion options over the next six years to destinations as remote as Romania and Russia to the east, Spain to the south and Germany's northern ports.
