Title: Systems Factfile. No. 26 Stuttgart, Germany
Abstract: Stuttgart's Stadtbahn system is described. Developed by relocating the city's tramways underground, the system has been expanding since 1985. Evidence of the transition from metre-gauge to 1435 mm gauge remains as three-rail formations and dual-height platforms. Some new lines have been added and some tramway routes abandoned altogether. The Stadtbahn system includes 24 km of tunnels and 22 underground stations. The closure of the final metre-gauge section ended the use of locally-built GT4 vehicles, now replaced by DT8 vehicles. Line 10, the 'Zahnradbahn', which uses 3 single car rack trams with external bicycle trailers and Line 20, the 'Standseilbahn', a 536 m funicular railway, form part of a leisure trail. The Stadtbahn runs from 4 am until 1 am with a 10 minute frequency during the day and additional services for special events. Brief details are given of extensions under construction and planned.
