Abstract: This article looks at the use of trams in the city of Potsdam, Germany. The Combino vehicles bought in 1998 from manufacturer Siemens were originally hailed as light, easy-access, low-maintenance and quiet. However, the construction methods used led to excessive torsional forces and cracks appeared in the tram cars, which were withdrawn for repair. The city council has cancelled a further order and is in consultation over specifications before making fresh orders for rolling stock: manufacturers are sending examples for trial. Low-floor trams are felt to be vulnerable in collisions. Formerly used Tatra trams have been brought back into service. As the city expands, some lines are little used while others have extensions proposed. Tram and commuter rail services are well co-ordinated.
