Title: Trans-European Links: Europe's Road Network is at a Turning Point
Abstract: This article looks at traffic forecasting in Europe, which is more successful there than in the U.S. The article is based in part on information presented at the EuroRoads 2006 conference in Paris in late June. The United Kingdom is affected the worst by traffic congestion, with Spain coming in closely behind. Congestion charging has been successful in Stockholm and London, but failed in Edinburgh because it was unclear if tolls would be used for infrastructure development, which was key to acceptance. The director of the Swedish Road Administration said road charging has proved successful, although initially the city's inhabitants were split fifty/fifty for and against. Today there is 20 percent less traffic and 70 percent of the residents approve of congestion charging.
