Title: Improving Victoria's rail network through innovative structural design
Abstract: The Regional Rail Link is a $4.8 billion, joint Commonwealth and Victorian Government funded infrastructure project designed to remove major bottlenecks in Victoriars rail network by separating regional and metropolitan trains as they travel from Melbourners west to the CBD. Aurecon-Hyder Joint Venture was the primary consultant for Regional Rail Link Work Package E which involved the section of work from Deer Park to West Werribee Junction. Works cover approximately 25km of new dual railway tracks, 22 road designs, 28 bridges, and two new train stations. A total of 11 rail crossings were designed along this section of the project, with bridge lengths ranging from 20 to 172 metres. A number of workshops and discussions between design, delivery and stakeholders (including V/line, RRLA and VicRoads) were undertaken during the design process to add value and innovation to the design. The cultural and environmental heritage, safety in design and future proofing requirement led to design innovations including: Maximising off-site production; Standardisation of structural elements; Minimising construction footprint; Operational and maintenance optimisation. The design innovations resulted in design and construction cost savings, reduced maintenance requirements, and has provided rail authorities, stakeholders, contractors and peers with industry-wide accepted details for other rail projects to follow.
