Abstract:THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED TO A SEMINAR WHICH TOOK PLACE DURING THE COURSE OF THE EXPOMAT 74 EXHIBITION ON 15TH MAY 1974. THE AUTHOR STRESSES THE ROLE OF CHEMISTRY IN THE AFFINITY OF BITUMEN FOR LIMESTO...THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED TO A SEMINAR WHICH TOOK PLACE DURING THE COURSE OF THE EXPOMAT 74 EXHIBITION ON 15TH MAY 1974. THE AUTHOR STRESSES THE ROLE OF CHEMISTRY IN THE AFFINITY OF BITUMEN FOR LIMESTONE AND EXPLAINS THAT THE BITUMEN HAS AN ACID TENDENCY, WITH A PH CONSIDERABLY LOWER THAN 7, WHILE THE LIMESTONE GENERALLY HAS A PH GREATER THAN 7. THE DESIRE FOR SATISFACTORY COMPACTION, WHICH IS THE OBJECT OF CONTINUOUS RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF HIGHWAY ENGINEERING, HAS LED TO THE USE OF FILLERS IN ORDER TO FILL THE VOIDS. IN ORDER TO OBTAIN SATISFACTORY RESULTS IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT ALL THE GRAINS SHOULD BE COATED. THE ADDITION OF FILLER INCREASES CONSIDERABLY THE SURFACES TO BE COVERED BY THE BITUMEN. WITH GRAINS OF 20 MICRONS, THE THICKNESS OF THE BITUMEN FILM SHOULD BE OF THE ORDER OF 5 MICRONS. THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES ACTIVE FILLERS WHICH HAVE A LOW VOID RATIO AND A REDUCED SPECIFIC SURFACE, THE USE OF WHICH SHOULD LEAD TO OVERALL SAVINGS IN BITUMEN, FOR THE SAME PERFORMANCE.
