Abstract: Mechanical tamping has been a well-known procedure in the field of maintenance of railway tracks for more than sixty years. Initial goals were to reduce maintenance cost and time needed for possessions. The latest maintenance machines from the Plasser and Theurer company have sophisticated tamping and recording systems which guarantee a high level of track geometry. This article describes specifics of the machines as well as the reasons for tamping, parameters, elimination of individual faults, turnout tamping, and optional equipment.
