Title: Multipurpose, Efficient Track Maintenance Equipment in Demand
Abstract: This article polls manufacturers and contractors to learn what transit agencies want in terms of equipment in order to maintain their tracks. The author finds that as rail budgets tighten, suppliers have had more requests for specialized vehicles and other equipment that incorporate several functions into one machine. And, as the deadline for installing positive train control nears, agencies are looking to contractors for help. Plasser American Corporation, which designs and manufactures track maintenance equipment, has found one of its most popular machines is the Metro 4X4, a heavy-duty tamping machine designed for transit and commuter railway systems. Harsco Rail reports that the increased interest in high-speed rail has popularized their NTC (new track construction) machine, which installs track on previously prepared roadbed and can build one to 1.5 miles of new track per day with a crew of fewer than ten. Railworks Corporation and Herzog companies are also represented in this article. A short accompanying article reviews how agencies must comply with positive train control regulations.
