Title: ALTERNATE FUEL: A DECISION TO LIVE WITH THE OCTA EXPERIENCE
Abstract: Over the past ten years alternate fuels have been the buzzword from boardroom to shop floor in the public transit industry. Lawmakers and regulators have vacillated between a number of fuels for internal combustion engines to zero emission vehicles. In 1992, the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) embarked on a five year demonstration project and tested three types of fuel. The knowledge gained by this demonstration project and those of other similar projects have enabled a proactive decision process to evolve. The main objective on the outset was to transition into an alternate fuel that closely replicated diesel. This paper will highlight OCTA's experiences with alternate fuels, information available, criteria for fuel selection, and the decision process. It will also discuss what is seen as the fuel of choice to transition to more efficient technologies.
