Title: Agreement Reached on 'Heartland Corridor' Tunnel Clearance Project
Abstract: This article focuses on an agreement to improve rail service in the Midwestern region of the U.S. Known as the “Heartland Corridor” project, it is intended to expand capacity of the rail lines serving the port of Norfolk on the East Coast to better serve the Great Lakes region. It is also a multi-modal effort, involving the use of stackable containers that can also travel by truck. A key step is to modify tracks and overcrossings to permit taller cars to pass through. That will permit twice as many containers, traveling in double-stacked configurations, to travel on the same number of trains as now. Additional projects involving rail-air connectors are also described.
