Abstract: This article describes how the San Joaquin Valley Railroad (SJVR) Company and the Indiana Harbor Belt (IHB) revitalized their maintenance-of-way (M/W) programs, leading to improvements in track, revenues and safety. The article relates how RailAmerica acquired SJVR, and with its aggressive capital improvement program, focused on revitalizing track structures. IHB, under new leadership, involved its M/W department in efforts directed at returning to a core program focusing on safety, high levels of customer service, and financial stability. The article describes current M/W challenges in track structure, such as relaying entire sections of rail and replacing ties, as well as enhancing 286k capabilities.
