Abstract: This article describes the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, a regional railroad that hauls rock, one of the lowest rated commodities, along a mere 350 miles of track and is highly successful--against all odds.. The author explains why intermodal business works best for railroads with hauls of at least 700 miles, and preferably 2,000, and why FEC is profitable with far less. The article includes an interview with the head of FEC, John D. McPherson, and his effort to invest in the infrastructure of the far larger Norfolk Southern. The author points out that the practices that have made FEC so successful, may be good lessons for others railroads, including Class 1s. An accompanying article describes a day in the life of FEC’s train 101.
