Abstract: For a number of years, Class I Railroads have acquired more fuel-efficient and less pollution-producing locomotives, among a host of initiatives. But many regional and short line railroads are also taking steps to shrink their environmental footprint by retrofitting or modifying locomotives to reduce emissions, by testing or using alternative fuels to generate fewer pollutants, or by incorporating green features into facilities to cut energy usage. There are many reasons why regional and short line railroads are trying to be more green, including to be a good neighbor to the communities where they operate. Another main goal is reducing operating costs such as by cutting fuel consumption. This article provides examples of how 1 short-line holding company and 7 regional and short line railroads are trying to meet these objectives while following their pursuits.
