Abstract: This article describes how transit agencies and passenger railroads are stepping up their efforts to improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and recycle waste. By their very nature, public transit agencies and passenger railroads are environmentally friendly because they provide tens of millions of people with rides to work or school every day, which keeps millions of automobiles off public roads. United States (U.S.) public transportation saves 37 million metric tons of carbon emissions and 4.2 billion of gasoline annually. The article describes how transit agencies across the country are stepping up efforts to improve the environment. In some cases, agencies are developing “green procurement” policies that require contractors and suppliers to meet certain environmental goals.
