Abstract: The second rail passage linking Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and Lanzhou, Gansu Province, was opened in mid-September. The rail line was built to ease the ever increasing transportation bottleneck with west China. The rail line should hasten the tapping of oil and gas, increase shipments of cotton, salt and grain from the far western regions to the rest of China and dramatically increase the flow of goods and services from the far more developed eastern regions to the west. The freight increase is expected to jump from 12 million tons annually to over 50 million tons annually by the turn of the century.
