Abstract: In June 2005, the NSW Premier announced the Governmentrs plan to invest $8 billion by the end of the next decade to deliver the Metropolitan Rail Expansion Program, a major public transport initiative that will see over 50 kilometres of new, electrified double-track rail lines constructed in Sydneyrsr North West, under Sydney Harbour and CBD, and in Sydneyrs South West, including approximately 25 kilometres of twin underground rail tunnel. Recognised as the largest addition to Sydneyrs electrified metropolitan rail network since the 1930s, the Metropolitan Rail Expansion Program is a visionary part of Sydneyrs public transport future and a key element of the NSW Governmentrs Metropolitan Strategy for Sydney, linking major new growth and employment areas of Sydney.
