Abstract: The technical possibilities and problems encountered in attempts to introduce less polluting buses in Belgium are described. The use of Liquefied Peroleum Gas, natural gas, hydrogen and electric vehicles are discussed. Advantages and disadvantages are outlined and comparisons made with conventional fuels. For electrically-powered vehicles the emissions due to various methods of electricity production are compared. Hydrogen as a fuel is considered in more detail. Again emissions due to production methods are considered. Storage parameters are compared with those of diesel oil. Technical problems associated with the combustion of hydrogen are discussed. The use of fuel cells is considered and the use of fuel cell buses in Belgium noted. For the covering abstract see IRRD 864909.
