Focuses on transit operators' response to the California Air Resources Board February 2000 mandate for gradually tighter emissions rules for new buses and the two paths it permits operators to take to achieve them, alternative-fuel technologies and cleaner diesel. Details experience of compressed natural gas fleets, which are the most popular currently, clean diesel, hybrid diesel/electric and natural- gas/electric buses and a proof-of-concept test of fuel-cell buses.
