Abstract: Eugenics was a popular scientific movement in the early twentieth century, which attempted to explain and solve human social problems by recourse to biological factors and remedies. The term was coined by Francis Galton in 1883 to refer to the genetic improvement of the human species. It became an international scientific and political crusade, as a scientific attempt to improve society, and took different forms in different countries. Although we have come to associate it with Nazi Germany, eugenics emerged first in England and America, and enjoyed popularity as a scientifically formulated social policy in various ways in France, Latin America, and Scandinavia.
