Title: DRIVER TURNOVER AND MANAGEMENT POLICY: A SURVEY OF TRUCKLOAD IRREGULAR ROUTE MOTOR CARRIERS
Abstract: Driver turnover has been, and continues to be, a serious problem for many truckload irregular route motor carriers (truckload carriers). Since unionized LTL carriers are larger and have work rules that inhibit carrier switching, their low turnover rates (approximately 15 percent) masked the sometimes astronomical rates experienced by the nonunion truckload carriers. This study provides information about the self-reported levels of turnover in the irregular route carriers and relates them to human resource policies. It also explores the relationship between turnover levels and the character of the trucking firm.
