Title: On Moral Cultivation and Cultural Background of Vernacular Novels in Relation to Morality Books in the late Ming and Early Qing Dynasties
Abstract: Vernacular novels and morality books are closely related.They have great similarities including theme,plot,narrative structure,language and the fate of protagonists.They are similarly rooted in supernatural tales in classical Chinese and historical biography.In addition,some morality books are marked by rich literariness and distinct characteristics of novels.Because of rulers' propagation,these morality books exerted a greater and earlier influence on the public.Due to moralizing tradition in novels and moralizing as a movement in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties,novels are considered the same as morality books in the purpose of educating the public.
