Title: In vitro antibacterial activities of different formula compounds of piperaci llin-sulbactam against 545 clinical isolates
Abstract: Objective: To study the in vitro antibacter ial activities of different formulations of piperacillin sulbactam(2∶1,4∶1 a nd 8∶1)and piperacillin alone against common clinical isolates,so as to select the best ratio of piperacillin and sulbactam in this compound. Methods: Bacterial susceptibility testing was performed on 545 clinical isolates using agar dilution method. The organisms included 19 species and more than 80% were β lactamase producing strains, collected from hospitals in Beijing,Shangha i,Tianjing,Nanjing,Chongqing and Dalian during the period of July 2000 to Februa ry 2002. Results:Piperacillin sulbactam with 2∶1 and 4∶1 rati o were highly active against most Gram negative bacteria, especially strains of Enterobacteriaceae.MIC 50 and MIC 90 were 0.5-16 mg/L and 1-32 mg/L re spectively, being 1/2 to 1/32 of that of piperacillin alone. Piperacillin sulbactam with 2∶1,4∶1 and 8∶1 ratio were also activities agai nst Staphylococcus aureus,Streptococcus haemolyticus and S. pneumoniae , MIC 90 being 1/2 to 1/4 that of piperacillin alone. Conclusions: Piperacillin and sulbactam with a ratio of 4∶1 is a good formulation which possesses high antibacterial activity against most clinical isolates.
