Title: Preparation of activated carbon for electric double layer capacitors from petroleum coke by microwave radiation
Abstract: Activated carbon for electric double layer capacitors (EDLC) was prepared from petroleum coke activated by KOH through microwave radiation. The influences of the mass ratio of KOH to petroleum coke、microwave radiation power and time on the pore size distribution of the activated carbon and the specific capacitance of EDLC were studied. The results show that the BET specific surface area of petrol coke-based activated carbon can reach 2 031. 96 m2/g, and the specific capacitance can reach 286.79 F/g while the mass ratio of KOH to petroleum coke is 3.5∶1 and the radiation power and time of microwave are 800 W and 7 minutes, respectively. Moreover, the EDLC with the activated carbon as electrodes exhibits excellent cyclic stability.
