Title: The Survey of Self-concept and Mental Health in Coronary Heart Disease Patients
Abstract: Objective This study is to explore the self-concept,mental health and the relationship between them in coronary heart disease (CHD) patients. Methods 117 CHD patients were investigated by using Self-concept Scale and Symptoms Checklists (SCL-90).Results 74.4% patients were moderate positive self concept owners, while 25.6% patients were moderate negative self concept owners.Male patients got the higher self concept scores than the female patients and the difference was significant. The somatization, interpersonal sensitivity, anxiety, depression and hostility scores of CHD patients were significantly higher than those of Chinese norm.Somatization,obsessive-compulsiveness,depression,anxiety,phobic anxiety scores were lower in male patients than in female patients and the difference was statistically significant. The scores of the self concept negatively related to the total scores of SCL-90 (r=-0.561,P0.01).Conclusion CHD patients were moderate self concept owners and had poor mental health. The results suggest that the higher the scores of self concept, the better status of their mental health.A positive self concept in CHD patients helps to enhance mental health.
