Title: Significance of caveolin-1 expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
Abstract: Objective To study the expression of caveolin-1 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and its mechanism of action in the process of occurrence and development. Methods Immunohistochemistry was used to analyze the expression of caveolin - 1 in 126 patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma,33 patients with esophageal carcinoma in situ, and 53 pateints with adjacent normal esophageal mucosa before the relationship between its expression and biological behavior was evaluated on the basis of complete clinical information. In addition,Western blotting was used to determine the expression of caveolin—1 in 30 patients with esophageal cancer and adjacent normal esophageal tissues.Results(1) The positive rate of caveolin—1 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, carcinoma in situ, and adjacent normal tissues was 86.5%,51.5%and 22.7%,respectively.The difference between them was statistically significant(P0.01).(2) The positive rate of caveolin -1 in stagesⅠ,Ⅱ,Ⅲof esophageal squamous cell carcinoma was 77,6%,86.1%,and 97.6%,respectively.The expression intensity of carcinoma tissue gradually increased with the advance of clinical stages, the differences being statistically significant(P=0.039 ).The positive rate of caveolin - 1 with group of lymph node metastasis was significantly higher than those without lymph node metastasis(P =0.023).(3) Western blotting results further confirmed that the expression of caveolin - 1 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma was significantly lower than that in adjacent normal esophageal tissue(P0.01).Conclusions The high expression of caveolin - 1 may be involved in the occurrence and development of esophageal cancer. The expression of caveolin - 1 is correlated with the clinical stage of esophageal cancer, and is a potential therapeutic target and a valuable prognostic indicator of esophageal cancer progression.
