Abstract: 2-Chloropropane was synthesized with concentrated hydrochloric acid and iso-propanol in the presence of zinc chloride as a catalyst. Through a series of experiments, the optimal procedure was summarized: the mole ratio of iso-propanol, concentrated hydrochloric acid and zinc chloride was 1∶1.5∶1.5, the reaction time and temperature were 3 h and 56 ℃ respectively . The yield was 75.4%, and the purity was 99.2%(w /w) tested by GC. During the procedure, the catalyst, zinc chloride, had a good life. The nucleophilic substitution reaction mechanism contains the two, S_N1 and S_N2.
