Title: Synthesis of Benzoic Acid from Benzyl Alcohol Catalyzed by Copper(II) Sulfate and Zinc Oxide Under Free-Solvent Condition
Abstract: Catalytic activity of the different mole proportions of Copper(Ⅱ) sulfate and Zinc oxide in oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzoic acid with oxygen were studied under Free-Solvent method.Effect of different mole proportions of Copper(Ⅱ) sulfate and Zinc oxide, catalyst dosage, sodium hydroxide dosage and reaction time on yield of benzoic acid were investigated. The reaction mechanism was also discussed. It is found that with Free-Solvent method, the yield of benzoic acid can be 97.42% under reaction conditions of mole ratio of benzyl alcohol to catalyst to sodium hydroxide is 20∶25∶3,mole ratio of Copper(Ⅱ) sulfate to Zinc oxide is 0.6 and the reaction time is 90 min.The reaction was environmental friendly, and no waste was produced during the process.
