Title: Ancient rhyme * -uη in the Hexi dialect of the 12 th Century
Abstract:The Tangut-Chinese transcriptions in Fanhan Heshi Zhangzhongzhu(《番汉合时掌中珠》1190) and the rhyme classifications in WenHai(《文海》1181) show that in the Hexi dialect of the 12 th century the ancient rhyme * ...The Tangut-Chinese transcriptions in Fanhan Heshi Zhangzhongzhu(《番汉合时掌中珠》1190) and the rhyme classifications in WenHai(《文海》1181) show that in the Hexi dialect of the 12 th century the ancient rhyme * -uη and vocalized rhyme * -αη or * -eη did not follow the same evolutional path.Accordingly,scholars held that there existed a nasalized vowel of the ancient rhyme * -uη.It is pointed out in the present paper,after summarizing the transcriptions in Fanhan Heshi Zhangzhongzhu and Leilin(《类林》),that * -uη was nasalized only when it followed dental and alveolar initials,but lost its nasal final under other circumstances.Furthermore,with the help of the Sanskrit-Chinese transcriptions,it is suggested the reason for the late evolution of losted -η with dental initials might be the mismatch of the syllables with dental initials with -u rhyme.Read More
