Abstract:In the Yue dialects,the characters under ancient rhyme Geng(梗) with three and four classes show two types of pronunciation: oral(vernacular) pronunciation and written(classical) pronunciation.Some sch...In the Yue dialects,the characters under ancient rhyme Geng(梗) with three and four classes show two types of pronunciation: oral(vernacular) pronunciation and written(classical) pronunciation.Some scholars hold that the vernacular sounds comes from Hakka dialects and the classical are inherent in the Yue dialect.With a great deal of materials of the Yue dialects,it concludes that the vernacular sounds are inherent from ancient Yue dialects,and that the classical pronunciations have resulted from the influence of Common Language(official Chinese).In some remote areas of Yue dialect,some characters under ancient rhymes Geng and Zeng with different pronunciations have converged on the same sounds more quickly than in the central Yue-dialect areas,which implied some social and cultural reasons.Read More
