Title: The effect of estrogen on the proliferation and Id3α gene expression in rat vascular smooth muscle cells
Abstract: Objective: To elucidate the effect of estrogen on the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and the involved possible molecular mechanism by analyzing the influence of estrogen on mRNA expression of Id3α in rat VSMCs. Methods: After pretreated with 17β-E2 (17β-Estradiol) for 24 hours, the number of cultured rat VSMCs was determined by MTT colorimetric method , and the expression of Id3α mRNA was analyzed by Northern blotting analysis. Results: Compared with the cells unpretreated with 17β-E2, the proliferation of VSMCs treated with 17β-E2 (1~100nmol/L) was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner, and the mRNA expression of Id3α was significantly higher. Conclusions: Estrogen inhibits the proliferation of VSMCs and the up-regulation of Id3α gene expression may represent part of the involved molecular mechanisms. [
