Title: Synthesis of iso-Butyl Benzoate Catalyzed by Sodium Hydrogen Sulfate
Abstract: Benzoic acid and iso-butyl alcohol were esterified to form iso-butyl benzoate in the presence of sodium hydrogen sulfate catalyst. The optimized reaction conditions were as follows.Using 0.1 mol benzoic acid,at mole ratio of alcohol to carboxylic acid 4∶1,with the catalyst 9.5% by weight of benzoic acid, the reaction proceeded for 3 hours at 115 ℃ to give the ester in 98% yield and of 99% purity. The catalyst can be easily recovered for reuse.
