Title: Changes of certain indexes of oxidative damage and apoptosis in brain of rat offsprings with lead exposure
Abstract: Objective To study the neurotoxic mechanisms by lead exposure during developmental period of CNS. Methods The rats in pregnant period and up to the 7th day after delivery were exposed to lead, and their offsprings were affected by lead during pregnant period and breast feeding period. Pb concentration in blood and brain of the offsprings were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The LPO level, GSH content and SOD activity in brain were also determined. In addition, the number of apoptotic cells in hippocampus and its nearby cortex were counted through in situ labeling method (TUNEL). Results The hippocampus and its nearby cortex in offspring rats exposed to lead, showed the increase of LPO level and apoptotic cells numbers. However, GSH content and SOD activity were decreased. Conclusion The developmental neurotoxicity induced by lead may be associated with the increase of ROS and apoptosis in brain.
