Title: Effects of Reaction Condition on Graft Polymerization between Butyl Acrylate and Starch
Abstract: Butyl acrylate ( BA) was grafted polymerized onto starch by using ammonium ceric nitrate a initiator in aqueous medium. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, and the sequence of puttir into monomer and initiator on the graft ratio and the graft efficiency was studied. Results showed that th graft ratio and the graft efficiency first increase and then decrease with the increase of temperature; the gra ratio and the graft efficiency increase with reaction time up to 3. 5 h and then level off; if the initiator is ad ed first, the graft ratio and graft efficiency are also higher. The product was determinated by infrared (IR spectroscopy and the crystal structures of natural starch and grafting products were studied by a polarizing m croscope. It was found that the crystal structures of starch were greatly destroyed after the grafting reaction
