Title: Screening of Antibacterial Activities in vitro of 8 Chinese Herbal Medicines from Yunnan
Abstract: Objective: To determine the in vitro antibacterial activity of ethanol extracts from 8 Chinese herbal medicines collected in Yunnan. Methods: The antibacterial and antifungal activities of ethanol extracts of the plant samples were tested with agar hole diffusion method. The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration(MBC) were determined by serial dilutions with a standard broth microdilution method. Results: Of the 16 extracts,15 showed potency against Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albican,of which 7 extracts showed better inhibition against S.aureus.Their inhibition zone diameters(IZD) against S.aureus and methicillin resistant S.aureus(MRSA) ranged 15~27 mm and 9~25 mm,and their MICs/MBCs were among 32~1 024 mg/L and 64~1 024 mg/L.Conclusion: Podocarpus macrophyllus(Thunb.) D.Don,and Tacca chantrieri Andre are the most active herbs against MRSA,and Candida albicans, and show broad spectrum of antimicrobial activities.
