Abstract: Gu', which refers to the vigour of strokes, forms the core of all theories about Chinese calligraphy in the Northern and Southern Dynasties. Gu theory is of aesthetic significance. It brings into light the fact that the vigour of strokes makes up the essential beauty of calligraphy. A common practice of liteary atid ar- tistic appraisal during this period and a need for literary criticism contributed a lot to the prevalence of Gu theory.
